Why in News?

A barrier lake in Tibet, containing an estimated 2–5 million cubic metres of water, began overflowing/breaching, raising concerns about flash flooding in Nepal and downstream areas.

What is a Barrier Lake?

A barrier lake is a temporary lake formed when a natural obstruction blocks the flow of a river or stream, causing water to accumulate upstream.

It is commonly called a:

  • Landslide lake
  • Landslide-dammed lake
  • Quake lake — when associated with earthquake-triggered blockage

What Can Create the Natural Barrier?

  • Landslides : A mass of rock, soil and debris enters a river and blocks its channel.
  • Earthquakes : Earthquakes can trigger Ground shaking → slope failure → river blockage → lake formation
  • Rock Avalanches : Large volumes of rock can rapidly enter narrow Himalayan valleys and obstruct rivers.
  • Glacial Collapse : Collapse of glaciers or glacial debris can block downstream drainage.
  • Extreme Rainfall / Cloudbursts : Heavy rainfall can destabilise slopes and trigger landslides.
