Highlight the achievements of Indian Space Research Organization in the domain of satellite navigation systems. How the upcoming ISRO’s Satellite Navigation Policy (SATNAV) policy could consolidate the earlier achievements.
ISRO achieved significant success in bringing up indigenous satellite navigations like GAGAN and NaVIC
- GAGAN: launched in 2001 it is a regional satellite based augmentation system (SBAS) to improve the accuracy of a GNSS receiver by providing reference signals. It was a significant step towards the Air Traffic Management system over Indian airspace.
- NaVIC: Navigation with Indian Constellation / Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system that provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services. It covers India and a region extending 1,500 km around it.
- ISRO’s evolving SATNAV policy intends to address the growing needs of space-based navigation and timing applications, with the view of self-reliance as well as sustenance to achieve maximum socio-economic benefits.
- The policy will enthuse the foreign investors to invest in our satellites (who were already motivated by the 100% FDI in Indian space sector)
- The policy will give a major push to the research and development ecosystem in the space domain (as the foreign and home based tech companies will be vying to associate with ISRO)
- The corrections, calibrations and upgradations in the already introduced GAGAN and NaVIC systems could be effectively done (upgradation and ensuring the capability to operate in conjecture with Global Navigation Satellite System)
- The start-up ecosystem in india will receive major boost
- The space sector could grab a major pie in the government's annual budget.
