How Can Sri Lankan Economic Crisis Affect India's Security?.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence due to balance of payment crisis, combined with sovereign debt. Being a close neighbour of India, instability in the country would have effects on India too.
Neighbourhood security challenge for India
- Refugee crisis
Large-scale refugee movement is expected towards India, especially Tamil Nadu. This would be similar to the LTTE era when uncontrolled migration was a major security challenge. - Arson and riots
People’s anger is giving rise to violent act of arson and riots. The security establishment is clueless and soon the administration may lose control. - Renewed militancy
The militancy could be renewed as government’s focus is on economic situation. The rebels could use this opportunity to strengthen their hold over northern areas.
India’s policy towards Sri Lanka
- Extend financial help
India would continue to extend financial help towards Sri Lanka as a stable country in neighbourhood will be in India’s own interest. - Ensure stable regime
A stable regime has to continue to take tough decisions. India must actively monitor the situation to see if the government is losing control. - Uphold rights of Tamils
Upholding rights of Tamils living in Sri Lanka is also of utmost priority. If the rights are violated, it may start another wave of uprising and civil war.
Thus, India is equally concerned about the situation. Resolving the issue and bringing stability would be critical to regional security as well.
