How transgenic plants are different from hybrid plants and what is their relevance in modern agriculture? Elaborate.. (250 Words)
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) or transgenic organism is a Plant, animal, bacterium, or other living organism that has had a foreign gene added to it by means of genetic engineering. The transgenic condition is achieved by injecting the foreign gene into the fertilized egg or into embryonic cells. The injected gene becomes part of the host cell's deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) within the chromosome and is then inherited by all the cells produced during embryonic development. It is thus present in all the cells of the resulting adult organism and is inherited by all its descendants.
Benefits of transgenic Crops
- Enhanced food taste and quality
- Reduced maturation time
- Increased nutrients, yields, and stress tolerance
- Improved resistance to disease, pests, and herbicides
- New products and growing techniques
