Why the move to link Aadhaar to voter ID cards is so contentious?.
Aadhar is a proof of an individual’s identity, which can be used to avail government services. The voter ID is a recognition document for being eligible to vote. The government recently decided to link Aadhar card and voter ID to prevent voter fraud.
Drawbacks of linking Aadhar and voter ID
- Leakage of voter data
As we have seen in numerous instances, Aadhar data is not completely secure and can be leaked. If Aadhar data is leaked, the linked voter data can also be leaked.
- Legitimize illegal voters
Aadhar is not a proof of citizenship and people are not authorized to use it as proof. If both the cards are linked, the existence of fake Aadhar card can enable fake voters to procure fake voter ID.
- Identify voting group
Accessing Aadhar data can provide access to voter data. This data can be analyzed to identify groups of people that have different political opinion. They can be targeted later.
Need to link Aadhar and voter ID
- Remove repeated voters
In many places, a single voter is registered at more than single location. Since Aadhar authentication will be needed with voter ID, repeated voters can be identified.
- Verify identity
Aadhar number associated with an individual is unique which not the case with voter ID. The Creation of fake profiles for voting can be curbed if identity is scrutinized.
Thus, linking of Aadhar and voter ID has many issues but if they are properly handled, linking both the cards can be proved successful.
