Dreams at Risk: The NEET Fallout

NEET Controversy and the Crisis of Exam Governance

One Nation, One Examination – A Broken Promise

NEET was introduced to unify medical admissions under the principle of “One Nation, One Examination”. The goal was transparency and fairness. Yet, repeated controversies have turned this promise into disillusionment, leaving millions of students questioning the credibility of the system.

The Fragile Foundation of NTA

The National Testing Agency (NTA), created under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, was entrusted with conducting large-scale exams. However, its non-statutory status and weak institutional capacity have left it vulnerable. Allegations of paper leaks, impersonation scams, and disputes over grace marks have become routine, eroding public trust.

The Human Cost of Irregularities

Nearly 22 lakh students appeared for NEET in 2026. For them, every irregularity is not just an administrative lapse but a personal crisis. Families face psychological, financial, and emotional strain. The credibility of exams is not an abstract issue—it directly impacts lives and futures.

Reforms Ignored: The Radhakrishnan Committee

The K. Radhakrishnan Committee had proposed critical reforms: restructuring the NTA, introducing multi-stage testing, hybrid exam models, and stronger coordination with state authorities. Yet, these recommendations remain largely unimplemented, leaving the system exposed to the same failures year after year.

Governance, Ethics, and Accountability

The NEET crisis is symptomatic of deeper issues—corruption, ethical decline, and lack of accountability. In a society where opportunities are scarce and competition is fierce, examinations become high-stakes battles. Without credible safeguards, they risk becoming breeding grounds for exploitation and mistrust.

Restoring Trust in Examinations

India must move beyond patchwork fixes. Transparent institutions, technological safeguards, and value-based governance are essential. Accountability must be enforced, not merely promised. Students deserve an examination system that protects their aspirations rather than jeopardizes them.

Conclusion

The NEET controversy is more than an exam scandal—it is a mirror reflecting the cracks in India’s governance and ethics. Reform is no longer optional; it is imperative. Restoring trust in competitive examinations is vital to safeguard the dreams of millions and uphold the credibility of India’s education system.
