Why is it in News?

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) have gained global attention due to their growing importance in clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, electronics, defence equipment, and advanced manufacturing. As countries seek to diversify supply chains, securing access to these strategic minerals has become a major economic and geopolitical priority.

What are Rare Earth Elements?

Rare Earth Elements are a group of 17 metallic elements comprising the 15 lanthanides along with scandium and yttrium. Although they are relatively abundant in the Earth''s crust, they are rarely found in economically viable concentrations, making their extraction and processing challenging.

Importance for India

Rare Earth Elements are essential for manufacturing permanent magnets, electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, semiconductors, aerospace equipment, defence technologies, and medical devices. Developing domestic capabilities in mining and processing these minerals will strengthen India''s technological self-reliance, energy security, and industrial competitiveness.

Challenges

India possesses reserves of rare earth minerals but faces challenges such as limited processing capacity, dependence on imports for refined rare earth products, environmental concerns associated with mining, and intense global competition. Supply chain concentration in a few countries also poses strategic risks.

Government Initiatives

The Government of India is promoting the exploration and sustainable development of critical minerals, including Rare Earth Elements. Efforts are being made to strengthen domestic mining, improve processing technologies, encourage research and development, and enhance international cooperation for securing critical mineral supply chains.

Way Forward

India should invest in advanced extraction and processing technologies, promote recycling of rare earth materials, strengthen public-private partnerships, expand geological exploration, and diversify international supply sources. A resilient rare earth ecosystem will support India''s transition towards clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
