ILO Convention No. 193 – Decent Work in the Platform Economy, 2026

• Adopted: 12 June 2026, at the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva.
• Nature: International labour Convention adopted by the ILO.
• Significance: It is the first international labour standard specifically dedicated to the platform economy.
• Focus: Promoting decent work for workers engaged through digital labour platforms.
• It addresses issues such as:
  • employment status and access to labour rights;
  • fair remuneration and working conditions;
  • occupational safety and health;
  • social protection;
  • workers'' personal data;
  • transparency and fairness in automated/algorithmic systems;
  • collective representation and social dialogue.
• The Convention recognises that platform workers may work under different employment arrangements, including self-employment, rather than making protection dependent simply on a particular contractual label.
• Digital labour platforms include platforms through which work is organised or mediated digitally, such as ride-hailing, delivery and online freelance work.
• The Convention also seeks to facilitate formalisation of work while balancing worker protection with innovation and sustainable enterprises.
• Current ratification status: As of 30 August 2026, 0 countries had ratified Convention No. 193.
• Therefore, India has not ratified Convention No. 193, but this is currently true of all ILO members.
