Assess the role of eminent women freedom fighters of India by highlighting the different pathways adopted by them
Non-violent approach:
a) Gandhian women leaders: They include Sarojini Naidu, Mira ben, Kasturba Gandhi and so on. They played key roles in the Gandhian mass movements like Non-cooperation movement, civil disobedience movement.
b) Theosophist women leaders: Annie Besant and her friends launched the Indian Home rule movement in 1916.
Violent approach:
a) Indian Republican Army: Pritilata Wadedar, Kalpana dutta played important role in the famous chittagong army raid (1930)
b) Indian National Army: Laxmi Sehgal served as the Minister of Women’s affairs in Azad Hind Government and also led the women’s regiment of Indian National Army.
c) Isolated Revolutionary leaders: Bina Das, Shanti ghosh and Suniti choudary showed their patriotism in their own ways.
Mixed approach: (Advocated both non-violence and violence as per the need)
Foreign Revolutionaries: Madame Bhikaji Cama from France supported the Indian Home rule society thriving in Britain. She was the one to hoist the Indian flag overseas for the first time.
Thus we come across many women independence activists agitating in different streams.
