Identify the social constraints in bringing about gender equality in Indian society.

Gender equality implies an equity approach to ensure women’s equal rights. Achieving gender equality is a major obstacle in India’s democratic development. The following social constraints hinder in bringing about Gender equality in Indian society.

  • Patriarchal psychology and male domination.
  • Lack of awareness about economic and political measures among women.
  • Legal illiteracy among women.
  • House hold commitments like taking care of children force women to be within the four walls.
  • Women are being considered as Sexual objects in the society.
  • Economic dependency on men especially in rural areas.
  • Dowry demands have forced women into a commodity like feature.
  • Apart from the above basic societal attitude towards women is a major hindrance.
