Introduction:
- India accepted UNESCO's Heritage Convention in 1977, making its sites eligible for inclusion on the list.
- The first sites to be inscribed were Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Agra Fort, and Taj Mahal (1983)
- Tanjore Big Temple built by Cholas (11 century)
- Khajuraho Group of Monuments built by Chandella Rajputs (11th century)
- Konark Sun Temple built by Eastern Gangas (13the century AD)
- Mahabalipuram Temples built by Pallavas (7th and 8th century AD)
- Hampi Temples built by Vijayanagara rulers (15th and 16th century AD)
- They project India’s rich cultural legacy to the world which improves its soft power credentials
- They boost the Indian economy by showcasing India as great tourist destination
- They provide enormous employment avenues to many people (both directly and indirectly)
- They promote a sense of cultural nationalism among Indians
