What functions does religion perform in a pluralistic society?. (UPSC CSE Mains 2023 - Sociology, Paper 1)
Religion is a complex and multifaceted cultural system that involves beliefs, practices, rituals, moral values, and a sense of the sacred or transcendent. It often provides a framework for understanding the ultimate nature of existence, the purpose of life, and the moral principles that guide individual and collective behaviour. Religions can be organized around deities or a higher power, sacred texts, and specific rituals, serving as a source of identity, community, and meaning for their adherents.
Functions of religion in pluralistic society
- Social Cohesion and Unity: Religion is a social institution that promotes social cohesion and unity. In a pluralistic society, different religious groups coexist and interact with each other, fostering mutual understanding, respect, and tolerance among different religious groups.
- Identity and Belonging: Religion offers a sense of identity and belonging to its followers. In a pluralistic society, individuals may identify with a particular religious group, providing them with a sense of belonging and community. This function is particularly important in multicultural societies where individuals may feel alienated or marginalized.
- Ethical fabric of a community: Redcliffe Brown’s perspective underscores the pivotal role of religious myths in establishing a fundamental basis for ethical conduct within society. According to his view, religion functions as a potent force, actively shaping moral principles and offering guidance for individual behavior. In this context, religious narratives emerge as not only cultural artifactsbut as influential instruments that contribute significantly to the ethical fabric of a community, shaping the norms that govern individual actions.
- Social Control:Religion reinforces social norms such as appropriate styles of dress, following the law, conforming to gender roles, and regulating sexual behavior It can also promote social change by inspiring social movements and revolutions, providing a moral critique of the existing social order. Kingsley Davis and Moore asserted that religion plays a crucial role in promoting a value consensus for proper behavior, legitimizing societal rewards, and generating consensus for punishment in cases of deviant behaviour.
- Opportunities for Socializing and Group Formation: Religion provides opportunities for socializing and the formation of groups. It offers social support and a place to meet others who hold similar values, as well as a place to seek help (spiritual and material) in times of need. Moreover, it can foster group cohesion and integration.
- Promoting Religious Pluralism:Religious pluralism is an attitude or policy regarding the diversity of religious belief systems coexisting in society. It can indicate one or more of the following:
- respecting the otherness of others, freedom of religion, and enabling a country made up of people of different faiths to exist without sectarian warfareor the persecution of religious minorities.
- Religious pluralism promotes mutual respect and understandingamong different religious groups.
Dysfunctions of religion in pluralistic society
- Karl Marx viewed religion as a tool used by the ruling class to maintain social order and control the working class. Religion, in this view, can perpetuate inequality and serve the interests of those in power.
- R Robinson in her Sociology of religion in India concluded that when pluralism becomes rule of law but monism is closer to people’s heart. People driven by emotion will challenge the edifice of pluralism. Anti-conversion movement is example of it.
- Challenging the notion of religion as the source of solidarity in modern society, critics argue thatcontemporary unity hinges not solely on religious affiliations but equally on the influence of modern constitutions and secularism. In this nuanced perspective, the emphasis shifts, acknowledging the pivotal role played by legal frameworks and secular principles in fostering both unity and diversity within societal structures..
In pluralistic societies, religion serves diverse roles, fostering cohesion, identity, and social change, yet it can also be a source of conflict. Acknowledging this duality, promoting interfaith dialogue becomes crucial for navigating diversity, cultivating respect, and building bridges towards harmonious coexistence.
