Critically examine the role of Dalit politics in widening caste divide.
Dalits are defined as a social group that is at the bottom of the caste-pyramid in India. Dalit politics is based on idea of dalit empowerment. However, in recent time it has gone beyond just social justice principles.
Role of dalit politics in widening caste divide
- Dalit vote bank
The politics has created a separate group of voters that vote only on the basis of caste identity. This has reduced chances of voting on the basis of capabilities. - Hate speeches
In many instances, dalit politicians have been preaching hate against other caste groups. This has started to create further rift.
Ex: Elgar Parishad - Counter polarization
The polarization of dalit votes is giving rise to counter-polarisation of other communities. This has resulted in caste politics.
Importance of dalit politics in India
- Stage for voiceless
Dalit politics has proved to be a stage for voiceless group. They have an opportunity to make their voice heard and ensure growth both socially and economically. - Sharing of power
Power was usually concentrated among higher castes but rise of dalit politics has ensured that even the backward groups get opportunity to rule. - Fight for individual rights
Political awareness created by dalit politics has allowed people to raise their voice for their rights. Political stage can be used to create an egalitarian society.
Thus, dalit politics has been able to further idea of social justice but some extremist groups have indulged in politics of hate that have further created rift on the basis of caste.
