Environmental Governance refers to the systems and processes in place to manage environmental resources and protect the environment. It encompasses the laws, policies, initiatives, and institutions that guide human interactions with nature.
The goals of environmental movements are to promote sustainability, protect the environment and natural resources. They also raise awareness about the impacts of human activities on the planet. Environmental movements also play an important role in advocating for policy changes, such as stronger environmental protections and regulations on industries and businesses.
Multi-stakeholder Integrated Sustainability Planning (MISP) is an integrated approach of planning in pursuit of sustainable development, involving various sectors and components of the ecosystem, meaning the stakeholders. MISP is multidisciplinary. It integrates economic, social, ecological, political, cultural, and spiritual concerns towards a holistic and sustainable development. For effective running of environmental governance, participatory planning involving the grassroots people is necessary, which would ensure “ownership” of the affected people, project victims – the stakeholders in the planning process. Such a participatory planning process would ensure that views and concerns of the grassroots people on environmental degradation, depletion of biodiversity, industrial pollution are reflected through governance of a country.
Environmental Governance in India has been continuously evolving as per the need to manage the country’s diverse environmental challenges. Through a combination of environmental legislation, policies, initiatives, and institutional mechanisms, India aims to protect its environment while pursuing sustainable development. Addressing existing challenges and implementing effective measures will be crucial for enhancing environmental protection in India and ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future.
