Asia’s Tradition of Public Service and “Greatness of Spirit”
Why in News?
- The Ramon Magsaysay Award 2026 has been conferred on Tommy Koh of Singapore, Bo Kyi of Myanmar and Runa Khan of Bangladesh for contributions to international dialogue and the rule of law, human-rights protection, and service to disadvantaged communities respectively.
- The award is often described as Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize and is associated with the legacy of Ramon Magsaysay, the seventh President of the Philippines.
What is the Ramon Magsaysay Award?
- Established in 1958: The award was instituted in memory of Ramon Magsaysay, who died in a plane crash in 1957.
- Foundation: The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) was established in 1957 by trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund with the concurrence of the Philippine government.
- Purpose: It recognises individuals and organisations demonstrating outstanding leadership and contributions to Asian societies, particularly through selfless service, community leadership and transformative action.
- Selection: Winners are chosen by the RMAF Board of Trustees following a confidential nomination and investigation process.
- Award: Recipients receive a medallion and certificate, with the presentation traditionally held in Manila.
- Award categories: Until 2008, the award was given across several fixed categories. Since 2009, it has generally moved away from fixed categories, except for Emergent Leadership.
Ramon Magsaysay: The Person Behind the Award
- Early life: Born on 31 August 1907, Magsaysay initially worked as an automobile mechanic.
- World War II: During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, he became a guerrilla leader and gained recognition for his leadership and resistance.
- Political career: He was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives in 1946 and later served as Secretary of National Defense.
- Presidency: He became President of the Philippines in 1953 as a candidate of the Nacionalista Party.
- Death: He died in a plane crash on 17 March 1957, cutting short his presidency.
- Legacy: The award seeks to preserve the values associated with his public life—leadership, integrity, service to ordinary people and responsiveness to communities.
