- Recently India banned pesticides like carbofuran, triazophos and so on owing to their toxic effects on both humans, animals and the general environment. They could leech into the soil and water bodies and harm the aquatic ecosystem.
Extent of Pesticide Poisoning in India:
- Pesticides are the leading cause of poisoning in India, with two in every three cases of poisoning happening because of pesticide consumption either intentionally or unintentionally, a new research on the prevalence of various types of poisoning in India has shown.
- The prevalence of pesticide poisoning in the adult population was 65 per cent and 22 per cent in children according to a recent study.
Pesticides regulation in India:
- India is a signatory to Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants and Rotterdam convention on pesticides regulation.
- Insecticide Act 1968, was enacted to regulate imports, manufacture, storage, transport, sale, distribution and use of insecticides with a view to prevent risk to human beings and animals.
- Department of Agriculture, Co-Operation & Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW) has launched a scheme “Strengthening and Modernization of Pest Management Approach in India” to promote Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- “Grow Safe food” Campaign has been initiated to create awareness about the safe and judicious use of pesticides among the various stakeholders.
- Draft Pesticides Management Bill 2017 aims to regulate the manufacture, imports, storage, transportation, inspection, testing and distribution of pesticides.
Conclusion:
- In 2019 the government of India banned 18 pesticides owing to their toxic nature on the basis of Anupam Verma Committee. Very recently the recommendation for banning 27 pesticides is under the purview of the Union Government.
