What is a DNA vaccine? Highlight its advantages and disadvantages when compared to other types of vaccines. Is DNA vaccine effective against COVID-19 infection?
DNA Vaccine:
- A DNA vaccine is a type of vaccine that transfects a specific antigen-coding DNA sequence into the cells of an organism as a mechanism to induce an immune response.
- No risk of infection
- Immune response is focused on the antigen of interest.
- Easy to develop, produce and store.
- Long term persistence of immunogen.
- Cost effective in nature.
- Not useful for non-protein based antigens such as bacterial polysaccharides.
- Cross contamination when manufacturing different types of live vaccines in same facility
- Potential to transfect non-target cells such as brain cells.
- India's drug regulator has approved the world's first DNA vaccine against Covid-19 for emergency use.
- The three-dose ZyCoV-D vaccine prevented symptomatic disease in 66% of those vaccinated, according to an interim study quoted by the vaccine maker Cadila Healthcare.
