1. Consider the following statements:
  1. Unlike the coral islands, the volcanic islands are very much lower and emerge just above the water surface.
  2. Oceanic islands can be either Volcanic Island or Coral island.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct? (a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2   2. With reference to ocean currents and waves, which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. Ocean currents are the horizontal motion of water while the waves are the vertical motion of water.
  2. Both the ocean currents and waves cause movement of water from one place to another.
Select the correct answer using the code given below: (a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2   3. With reference to ‘Red coral’, consider the following statements:
  1. They secrete a comparatively high amount of calcium carbonate and build reef very quickly.
  2. They are found in the Mediterranean Sea.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct? (a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2   4. Which of the following statements is/are incorrect about cool temperate eastern margin climate? 1. There is no distinct summer in this climatic region.  2. There is the presence of cooling effects of the off-shore cold currents from the Arctic.  (a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2   5. Which of the following statements is/are correct regarding the structure of the atmosphere?
  1. Temperature decreases steadily with increase in height.
  2. Thickness of the troposphere is highest at the equator and lowest at the poles.
  3. Ionosphere layer is responsible for radio transmission on earth.
Select the correct answer using the option given below (a) 2 and 3 only (b) 1 and 2 only (c) 1and 3 only (d) 1, 2 and 3   Answers 1. (b) Statement 1 is incorrect. Unlike the Volcanic islands, the coral islands are very much lower and emerge just above the water surface. These islands, built up by coral animals of various species, are found both near the shores of the mainland and in the midst of oceans. Coral islands include the Marshall Islands, Gilbert and Ellice Islands of the Pacific; Bermuda in the Atlantic and the Laccadives and Maldives of the Indian Ocean.  Statement 2 is correct. Oceanic islands fall into one of the following groups: Volcanic islands: Mauna Loa in Hawaii Coral islands: Gilbert island in pacific   2. (d) Statement 1 is incorrect. Ocean currents are the continuous flow of huge amounts of water in a definite direction while the waves are the horizontal motion of water. The vertical motion of ocean water is called tide. Statement 2 is incorrect. Water moves ahead from one place to another through ocean currents while the water in the waves does not move, but the wave trains move ahead.   Water particles only travel in a small circle as a wave passes. Wind provides energy to the waves. Wind causes waves to travel in the ocean and the energy is released on shorelines. The motion of the surface water seldom affects the stagnant deep bottom water of the oceans. As a wave approaches the beach, it slows down. This is due to the friction occurring between the dynamic water and the seafloor.   3. (b) Statements 1 is incorrect. Red coral is a non-reef building species of coral. Another non-reef building coral species is the precious corals of the Pacific Ocean. Red coral is found in the Mediterranean Sea. They survive in the colder and even the deeper waters. As a rule they thrive well only in warmer tropical seas. Hence, statement 2 is correct.    4. (a) There is a distinct summer in the Laurentian type of climate.  The Laurentian type of climate has cold, dry winters and warm, wet summers, wet winters. Winter temperatures are below freezing-point and snowfall is quite natural.   Summers are as warm as the tropics (~25 °C). It receives cooling effects of the off-shore cold currents from the arctic which reduces the summer temperature.  In the case of the Savanna type of climate, in the northern hemisphere, the rainy season begins in May and lasts till September. In Laurentian climate, rainfall occurs throughout the year with summer maxima [easterly winds from the oceans bring rains] Annual rainfall ranges from 75 to 150 cm [two – thirds of rainfall occurs in the summer].     5. (a)
Temperature of air decline steadily in Troposphere, which is the lowermost layer of the atmosphere. After this, the temperature remains constant for some height and then increases in the stratosphere. Height of the troposphere is moreover the equator due to strong convection currents. It is minimum at the poles. Ionosphere contains electrically charged particles called ions which reflect radio waves and thus makes radio transmission possible on the earth.
