1. Which of the following type of silk is known as 'Peace Silk'? (a) Tasar Silk (b) Muga Silk (c) Mulberry Silk (d) Eri Silk 2. Which of the following is/are true regarding the Kharai Camel? 1) It is not recognized as a separate species. 2) It is found only in Gujarat. (a) 1 Only (b) 2 Only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2 3. Which of the following is/are false? 1) CNG achieves a higher reduction in volume than LNG. 2) LNG cannot be used to fuel the road transport sector. (a) 1 Only (b) 2 Only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2 4. Polymetallic nodules are also known as (a) Manganese nodules (b) Magnesium nodules (c) Nickel nodules (d) Multimineral nodules 5. Which of the following is/are true regarding Coalbed methane (CBM)? 1) The methane is in a near-liquid state. 2) The methane is stored within the coal due to a phenomenon called absorption. (a) 1 Only (b) 2 Only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2 Answers 1.(d) Also known as Endi or Errandi, Eri is a multivoltine silk spun from open-ended cocoons, unlike other varieties of silk. Eri silk is the product of the domesticated silkworm, Philosamia ricini that feeds mainly on castor leaves. The wooly white silk is often referred to as the fabric of peace when it is processed without the killing of the silk worm, this process results in a silk called Ahimsa silk. Moths leave the cocoon and then the cocoons are harvested to be spun. The Eri silkworm is the only completely domesticated silkworm other than Bombyx mori. Eri caterpillars are grown in the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and some small cities in other states. The heavy rainfall and humid atmosphere of the region suits the Eri culture. 2. (c) Kharai Camels are found in Kutch, Gujarat. Kutch's 'swimming camels' have got recognition as a separate breed of camels. Gujarat is the only home to Kharai camel who have adapted to the extreme climate of rann and shallow seas and high salinity. As per latest counting, the state has 6,200 camels out of which around 2,200 are found in areas such as Lakhpat, Abdasa, Mundra and Bhachau in Kutch whereas the remaining are seen in South Gujarat near Aliya Bet. As the breeds having less than 10,000 population are identified as endangered, it can get special recognition and care. The move will also throw light on the life of maaldhari community whose livelihood is intertwined with that of the animal. 3. (c) LNG achieves a higher reduction in volume than compressed natural gas (CNG) so that the (volumetric) energy density of LNG is 2.4 times greater than that of CNG or 60 percent that of diesel fuel. This makes LNG cost efficient to transport over long distances where pipelines do not exist. Specially designed cryogenic sea vessels (LNG carriers) or cryogenic road tankers are used for its transport. LNG is principally used for transporting natural gas to markets, where it is regasified and distributed as pipeline natural gas. It can be used in natural gas vehicles, although it is more common to design vehicles to use compressed natural gas. LNG has the potential to replace LPG, Naphtha, and HFO fuel. It would serve a variety of industries such as metal, ceramic and glass, food processing, refractory’s etc. as well as heavy mining machineries. LNG could even fuel the road transport sector. 4. (a) Polymetallic nodules (also known as manganese nodules) are potato-shaped, largely porous nodules found in abundance carpeting the sea floor of world oceans in deep sea. Besides manganese and iron, they contain nickel, copper, cobalt, lead, molybdenum, cadmium, vanadium, titanium, of which nickel, cobalt and copper are considered to be of economic and strategic importance. India signed a 15 year contract for exploration of Polymetallic Nodules (PMN) in Central Indian Ocean Basin with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) (an Institution set up under the Convention on Law of the Sea to which India is a Party) on 25th March, 2002 with the approval of Cabinet. India is presently having an area of 75,000 sq.km. located about 2000 km away from her southern tip for exploration of PMN. The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of contract between Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India and the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for exploration of Polymetallic Nodules for a further period of 5 years (2017-22). 5.(a) Coalbed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other conventional gas reservoir, as the methane is stored within the coal by a process called adsorption. The methane is in a near-liquid state, lining the inside of pores within the coal (called the matrix). The open fractures in the coal (called the cleats) can also contain free gas or can be saturated with water. Gas contained in coal bed methane is mainly methane and trace quantities of ethane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and few other gases. Intrinsic properties of coal as found in nature determine the amount of gas that can be recovered.
