Recently two new tiger reserves, SrIvilliputhur- Megamalai Tiger Reserve and Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve have been established in India. Discuss the eventual developments and benefits associated with this move. The addition of two new reserves has brought the total number of Tiger reserves in the country to 52. Significance of the recent move:
  1. The obvious benefits of declaring new tiger reserves are increased allocation of funds, technology and personnel for protecting the tiger.
  2. The National Tiger Conservation Authority guidelines for effective implementation of Project Tiger will be seriously taken up by the new reserves.
  3. Those state governments will implement their Tiger Conservation Plan
  4. The state-of-the-art techniques like M-STriPES will be extended to these two tiger reserves for effective patrolling and monitoring.
  5. Afforestation funds (CAMPA) could be effectively utilised to increase the natural resources of those reserves
  6. Increased media attention towards tiger conservation
Benefit to Tigers:
  1. Could increase the prey base and overall health of tigers
  2. Could effectively curtail the cases of illegal poaching and accidental deaths
Benefits to Humans:
  1. The serious issue of Man-Tiger conflict could be effectively addressed
  2. The cases of cattle loss due to tiger attack could be checked
  3. The vibrant tiger populations will ensure overall ecological services exploited by human community
  4. The eco-tourism projects associated with tiger will improve the economy of the people surrounding the tiger reserves
  5. The cultural, aesthetics and educational values could be improved.
Road Ahead: India has achieved remarkable success in improving the population of tigers in the last few years (from around 1500 tiger population in 2006 to around 3000 in 2020).  The recent move will certainly add further muscle to India’s Royal Bengal Tiger Conservation programme.
