Why in News?
A new phase of underwater archaeological exploration is being undertaken off the coast of Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu to investigate submerged archaeological remains and reconstruct its ancient maritime history.
What is Poompuhar?
- Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripoompattinam, was an ancient port city on the Tamil Nadu coast.
- Located near the mouth of the River Kaveri, opening into the Bay of Bengal.
- It is closely associated with the Sangam Age and the early Cholas.
- Ancient literary sources portray it as an important centre of maritime trade and urban life.
Sangam Age
- Poompuhar has an important place in Tamil Sangam literature.
- It is particularly associated with: Pattinappalai, Silappadikaram, Manimekalai
Early Chola Maritime Activity
- Associated with the early Chola polity.
