What is a DNA vaccine?  Highlight its advantages and disadvantages when compared to other types of vaccines.  Is DNA vaccine effective against COVID-19 infection? DNA Vaccine:
  • A DNA vaccine is a type of vaccine that transfects a specific antigen-coding DNA sequence into the cells of an organism as a mechanism to induce an immune response.
Advantages:
  1. No risk of infection
  2. Immune response is focused on the antigen of interest.
  3. Easy to develop, produce and store.
  4. Long term persistence of immunogen.
  5. Cost effective in nature.
Disadvantages:
  1. Not useful for non-protein based antigens such as bacterial polysaccharides.
  2. Cross contamination when manufacturing different types of live vaccines in same facility
  3. Potential to transfect non-target cells such as brain cells.
India and DNA vaccine against Covid-19:
  1. India's drug regulator has approved the world's first DNA vaccine against Covid-19 for emergency use.
  2. The three-dose ZyCoV-D vaccine prevented symptomatic disease in 66% of those vaccinated, according to an interim study quoted by the vaccine maker Cadila Healthcare.
