With technological advancements, space tourism is an emerging industry of the 21st century.  Highlight India’s venture in the same.  Highlight the various concerns associated with space tourism. Space Tourism: 
  • Space tourism is human space travel for recreational purposes. There are several different types of space tourism, including orbital, suborbital and lunar space tourism.
Factors promoting space tourism: 
  1. Technological advancements and decline in cost of space tourism
  2. Development of space accommodation like International Space Station and the like
  3. Emergence of private players like SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic.
India’s Gaganyaan:
  1. The Indian Space Research Organization’s Gaganyan mission (primary manned mission to space) has the potential to grease the wheels for India to enter the space tourism market and open the avenues for mammoth commercial opportunities.
  2. India’s endeavour with space tourism would have numerous positive effects, including the creation of employment and sizable revenues and investments.
  3. However, where India is excelling at technology and low costs, it lags behind with respect to the express laws and legislations to govern outer space activities including space tourism.
Concerns associated with Space tourism:
  1. The Outer Space Treaty doesn’t provide for the regulation of space tourism and the tourists.
  2. Passenger liability and space insurance mechanisms are yet to get shape.
  3. Issues associated with space debris and carbon dioxide emissions from space tourism.
Conclusion:
  • With the space tourism industry inching closer to launch every day, there emerges a dire need to formulate laws and legislations that shall regulate issues of space tourism including the regulation of private players.
