Analyse the role of social and cultural settings in shaping and constructing individual morality.(150 words)10
Individual morality means the moral standards which determine the rightness or wrongness of an individual’s actions. Using these standards the moral worthiness or non-worthiness of an individual and related value system can be assessed. For instance certain food practices are considered good by some individuals and bad by other individuals. This points out to the fact that an individual’s social and cultural settings play important role in this regard.
Role of social and cultural settings in shaping and constructing individual morality: An individual derive certain reasons to consolidate his own morality on the basis of prevailing social and cultural practices. For example, people in North Eastern part of India consumes beef because of it is part of their cultural food habits. They can morally justify their action citing reasons of cultural practices, environmental settings, dietary requirements etc.
Similarly, the Jallikattu event is part of cultural history of Tamilnadu state, thus celebrating it, does not create any individual moral crisis. However people from other cultural backgrounds such as the followers of Jainism may find it immoral and cruel.
Therefore, the social and cultural settings play a crucial role in shaping individual morality. However individual should strive to critically scrutinize their individual moral constitution with current ethical developments in contemporary times.
