Relocation is a process in which one animal is moved from one ecosystem to another for reasons such as populating species, preventing conflict or distributing species. The process has been criticized by environmentalists for being cruel to animals. Benefits of relocation

  • Protect species A particular species may be facing risk of extinction in a particular ecosystem. By relocating to another area, there are chances for its survival.
Issues with relocation
  • Man-animal conflict By introducing a new species, it may start a conflict between humans and animals. This can threaten both the animal life and also humans.
  • Journey fatigue Animal may not be ready for long journey and may die during or after the journey. The process will put its life in danger.
Significance of cheetah relocation in India

  • Boost ecotourism Being a rare species in India, relocating cheetah may boost ecotourism in protected area. This may generate revenues for self sustenance of project.
  • Genetic diversification By distributing a species, its gene pool will also be diversified. This will ensure survival of species by adjusting to changing environmental conditions.
Thus, relocation should be carried out scientifically by following all processes. It is necessary that animals be given rights to exist peacefully.
