Assess the benefits and risks of relocation of animals from one region to another . (150 Words, 10)
Relocation is a process in which one animal is moved from one ecosystem to another for reasons such as populating species, preventing conflict or distributing species. The process has been criticized by environmentalists for being cruel to animals.
Benefits of relocation
- Balance ecology By relocating a particular animal to or from an ecosystem, the ecology can be balanced. There would be checks and balances between herbivores and carnivores.
- Protect species A particular species may be facing risk of extinction in a particular ecosystem. By relocating to another area, there are chances for its survival.
- Man-animal conflict By introducing a new species, it may start a conflict between humans and animals. This can threaten both the animal life and also humans.
- Journey fatigue Animal may not be ready for long journey and may die during or after the journey. The process will put its life in danger.
- Introducing extinct species Cheetah is extinct in India and by introducing a sister species from Africa, the species may rejuvenate and grow in Indian forests.
- Boost ecotourism Being a rare species in India, relocating cheetah may boost ecotourism in protected area. This may generate revenues for self sustenance of project.
- Genetic diversification By distributing a species, its gene pool will also be diversified. This will ensure survival of species by adjusting to changing environmental conditions.
