Discuss the elements of ‘frozen semen technology’. What are ‘embryo transfer’, ‘transgenic animals’, ‘DNA recombinant technique’? (250 words)
Frozen semen technology is used to produce improved quality animal generation. With the help of liquid nitrogen, semen of a male animal, of species with desired quality, are frozen for a long period in Semen Bank for its use in future to get off springs by artificial insemination.
In embryo transfer, to produce hybrid offspring, embryo developed in Female animal of desired characteristics, are transferred into the uterus of another animal to develop the offspring in its body. By this technique offspring with desired qualities can be produced even by less quality animals.
A transgenic animal is that has had a foreign gene added to it by means of genetic engineering. The transgenic condition is achieved by injecting the foreign gene into the fertilized egg or into embryonic cells. The injected gene becomes part of the host cell's deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) within the chromosome and is then inherited by all the cells produced during embryonic development.
Combining genes from different organisms is known as recombinant DNA technology
