Do you consider Covid-19 nasal vaccine could be a game-changer in India?.
Recent reports have shown that intranasal vaccine is under works and human trials have been going on. This is the much needed solution to get rid of medical waste generated during regular vaccination process.
Issues with intramuscular injection
- Medical waste Similar to plastic, medical waste is a big threat to environment. There is a need to develop specialised mechanism to handle it effectively.
- Less effective antibodies Normal vaccine stimulates antibodies in blood, which is directed towards the site of infection. These antibodies are not that effective.
- Spray in nasal cavity The vaccine will be present in a small container which has to be place near nosily entry and sprayed inside. It will enter in form of an aerosol.
- Activate mucosal antibodies Normal vaccine activates only blood antibodies but intranasal vaccine activates antibodies of mucosal tissue, which are more effective in tackling antigens entering from air pathway.
- No expertise needed There will be no need for medical experts to administer vaccine as it is easier and also carried out by people themselves or any non professionals.
- Faster coverage Larger population can be covered over shorter duration as people can self administer. There will not be load on health infrastructure.
