How important is the growing political construct, “Indo-Pacific” for India?
How important is the growing political construct, “Indo-Pacific” for India?
Till a decade ago only the concept of Asia-Pacific was prevalent in the international diplomatic arena which categorically excluded India in its ambit. However, of late, the concept of Asia-Pacific has been muted by the emerging concept of Indo-Pacific, which of course gives India its eminent place in it.
It is pretty obvious that the Chinese growing assertiveness in many areas, India’s emerging economic growth and the United States’ ambition to nullify Chinese dominance are the major pushing factors for this transformation.
Though the idea of Indo-Pacific is yet gain an international consensus regarding the inclusion and exclusion of constituent countries, it is apparent that India’s centrality in it will be unquestionable. This centrality could be rightly grasped for ensuring India’s territorial as well as economic security.
To be precise, free and open seas especially which are near China, on time completion of infrastructure projects in ASEAN and African countries by India, vibrant Indian connection with the central asian countries, rejuvenation of Indo-Russian friendship and so on could be achieved with ease.
India should vigorously engage with all the stakeholder countries including China both in a bilateral and multilateral manner. The platforms like Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ASEAN and Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) could aid in fulfilling India’s ambitions.
The growing European nations interest over Indo-Pacific region could also become handy for India’s quest for regional superpower. Hence it is imperative for India to shape the Indo-Pacific construct converging reasonable interests of all the stakeholders.
