‘The mainstay of Mahatma Gandhi’s movements was the rural India.’ Elucidate. (200 words)
- After returning from South Africa, Gandhiji decided to round all over the country. He first came in struggle with the government, through Champaran Satyagraha of 1917, which was for the cause of Indigo farmers. He pictured the regional problem at the national level.
- His Kheda Satyagraha was again rural based.
- Gandhi wanted to develop village sustainability. Gandhi explained how to create positive development within a country by developing rural economy. His emphasis on Khadi and rural handicraft shows his involvement in the development of rural economy. He had even opposed heavy industry because it would have adverse impact on rural economy.
- His movements for elimination of untouchability, upliftment of harijans etc were basically based on rural life.
- He sought rural mass cooperation for achievement of freedom and emphasized that only educated urban people cannot win freedom. He regarded rural areas as the soul of India. After 1920 all his movements like Civil Disobedience, Non-cooperation etc involved large masses of rural people.
Thus the mainstay of Gandhi’s movements was the rural India.
