India is gearing up to become a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council.  What prevents India from becoming its permanent member.  What are the credentials that India does have to become a permanent UNSC member? United Nations Security Council:
  • The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, charged with ensuring international peace and security.
  • It also has the power of recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly, and approving any changes to the UN Charter.
Though India aspired to become a permanent member in the UNSC for a long time, it couldn’t make it for various reasons:
  • Lack of political will on the part of 5 permanent members of UNSC like US and China towards overall United Nations reforms (in particular the reform of UNSC)
  • Strong lobby of Coffee club countries against the aspirations of G4 countries (especially pakistan against India)
  • Rejection of Non-Proliferation Treaty by India (pinpointing by certain countries)
  • Anti-India sentiment persisting among the Chinese politicians
  • India’s poor human development rankings
  • India’s inability to completely quell the insurgents and terrorists
India’s Credentials:
  • India is the biggest democracy as well as the third largest economy in the world
  • India hosts 1/6 of the world’s population
  • It always stands for peaceful amicable solutions to global issues and also for rules-based international order
  • It warmly supports globalization and multilateralism
  • India is responsible nuclear power (Ex:- No-First Use policy)
  • It never meddles in the internal affairs of other countries
  • It works shoulder to shoulder with International institutions for the welfare of humanity
  • It abide by the principles of international law in almost all cases
  • It is emerging as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific region
  • It contributed tremendously to the United Nations Peacekeeping missions launched in various countries.
  • It strives for the welfare of least developed countries in many ways. (Ex:- Grants to African countries)
  • It shows its leadership in the domain of sustainable development. (Ex:-International Solar alliance)
Way Forward: Keeping India’s achievements and credentials in mind, we could positively hope for our permanent membership in UNSC in the near future, for a safer and sustainable world.
