The 1990s was a game-changer in world history as it shrunk the powers of USSR and made the world unipolar until the rise of China in 2000s. Russia has since been trying to regain its influence and dominance.
Breakdown of USSR
- Reduced Russian influence The breakdown of USSR signaled reduction in Russian area of influence. The countries within the erstwhile union started to drift towards western powers.
- Fall of communism The flag-bearer of communism in the world has now become a perfect example of neo-capitalism. Fall of USSR also meant fall of communism.
- Unipolar world The world had stayed bipolar since the World War II. The fall in fortunes of USSR led to fall in its super-power status.
