What is International Space Station? What is its significance in scientific research? What is the potential role of private sector in developing similar low orbit revolving space modules. (200 Words, 15)
International Space Station (ISS) is a low orbit spacecraft permanently revolving around the earth and acts as a base for astronauts performing space studies. It was a multinational effort by various countries to develop the ISS.
Significance of ISS
- Base for deep missions The ISS is a base for all deep space missions or research that needs to be carried out. It will house astronauts and will prepare them for future travel.
- Study crops and diseases The ISS has been used to grow crops in zero gravity to understand growth. The effects of climate on human health are also studied.
- Fundamental science Physics and chemistry experiments are fairly common on ISS. The studies on light, gravity, fourth state of matter were all performed on ISS.
- Construction Private sector companies have the capital and technology to build space modules and deploy them in low earth orbits for scientific studies.
- Service for space studies These modules can be rented by individuals or groups intending to perform studies. Private sectors also have the capability to arrange transport till the module.
- Reduce costs The cost of building and maintaining space module will be burden for national space organizations such as NASA. It can pay and use service for a fraction of the actual cost
- Focus on deep space studies The money and human resource can be utilized for deep space studies instead of building space modules and rockets. This will augur well for future of astrophysics.
