Discuss the utilisation of Waste Materials in Road Construction
Scientists and engineers have been coming up with new methods of construction by recycling existing waste. This method has been gaining precedence over traditional ways as effect on environment is a major criterion for infrastructure development.
Waste materials in road construction
- Metal slag
Metal slag is a waste byproduct obtained during smelting process. Slag obtained during steel and copper extraction can be cooled and used as aggregates. - Plastic material
Use of plastic in road construction is tried and tested method. Since plastic does not decompose, it can be reused for fruitful purpose. - Coal fly ash
Coal fly ash is a byproduct of coal burning. The material can be used for banking and leveling of land during construction. It can be compressed to make bricks. - Waste tyres
Studies have shown that waste rubber tyres can be smelted and mixed with bitumen during construction of roads. It provides elasticity.
Benefits associated with using waste
- Cost reduction
Since materials are waste and easily available, the end cost of construction is reduced significantly. This makes them attractive option. - Increase durability
The materials are not only cheap but are more durable than natural materials. Increase in lifespan makes them suitable for developing countries. - Reduce carbon footprint
Extraction of materials for construction such as aggregates, bitumen, sand etc emits carbon. The use of recycled waste does not need special process for extraction.
Thus, waste materials have the potential to make our infrastructure cost-effective. This will reduce financial strain on government.
