India's quest for hydrogen 'riddled with challenges' . Comment.
Hydrogen energy is one of the major constituent of India’s renewable energy plans. Green hydrogen, which is produced through renewable energy electrolysis, will be used to achieve India’s transition from fossil fuels.
Role of hydrogen in making India energy exporter
- Green energy
Hydrogen is a green energy that does not emit any carbon. Countries aiming to become net zero emitter will have to adopt hydrogen aggressively in upcoming days. - Infrastructure
India is planning necessary infrastructure needed for green hydrogen production and import. This includes renewable electricity, storage and export mechanism.
Challenges in achieving objectives
- High cost of hydrogen
Hydrogen fuel will be priced higher due to cost involved in production. This will discourage its widespread adoption. - Scarcity of water
Hydrogen is produced through electrolysis of water. In many parts of India, there is scarcity of water. This makes it challenging for obtaining water for electrolysis. - Storage of hydrogen
Hydrogen is a highly combustible fuel and needs special arrangements to be stored safely. Such infrastructure creation is costly. - Cheaper electricity
The industry can be sustained if electricity is cheaper. During peak summer months, there will be shortage of electricity available for hydrogen manufacturing.
The three Es of India’s energy road map – energy security, energy sustainability and energy access – can be achieved through hydrogen. India must use this opportunity to achieve economic objectives.
Thus, hydrogen can help realize the goal of energy security and make India a net exporter of energy to countries such as Germany, Japan, and South Korea etc in future.
