What is Xenotransplantation? How is this technique a breakthrough in medical science? . (200 words)
The process of transplanting tissues, cell, organs or fluids from another species into a human body is called Xenotransplantation. The technique has recently been used for experimental studies to understand if organs of another species are compatible with humans.
Importance for chronic patients
- Cross species organ transplant The technique allows organs from another species to be used for humans. This will balance the shortage of human organs for donation.
- Easy access to organs The technique ensures easy access to organs based on urgent need. This is not possible for human organs and an individual has to spend years to be eligible for donation.
- Reduce cost of treatment With easy availability of organs and more number of surgeries performed, the cost would come down significantly in the long run.
- Ethical considerations Killing animals for human needs violates ethical values. There has to be mechanism to ensure that donor animals are not mistreated.
- Genetic mismatch There are high chances of genetic mismatch in organs. This can result in rejection of organ by the body. Genetically modified animals needs to be grown specifically for the purpose.
